”The lessons we can draw about the Cold War is that the political will to avoid a large-scale confrontation was possible, especially because of the danger posed by nuclear weapons. Negotiations and political meetings took place more frequently than today. Despite the different political cycles during the decades of the Cold War, the trend was toward greater concern for human rights, freedom of the press, and the consolidation of the democratic model. Currently, there is a regression of all this in much of the world. Bipolarity is becoming ever stronger and the small or medium powers have practically no voice, which ally themselves with the hegemonic power of the bloc to which they belong, with practically no criticism whatsoever or proposals for mediation. The war in Ukraine or the invasion of Gaza are two clear examples.”
