“The most important lesson of the Cold War, in my view, is the imperative of combining deterrence with dialogue in great power relations. While deterrence through military strength was crucial in the conflict with the Soviet Union, it alone could not ensure lasting peace. Moreover, dialogue was crucial to prevent the risk of escalation. Today, as tensions between Russia and the West are increasing, the lessons of the Cold War remain relevant. While deterrence measures are vital (and should be the current priority), they must eventually be complemented by sustained efforts at dialogue and diplomacy. The Cold War teaches us that dialogue is essential to move towards détente once the opportunity presents itself.”
